South Live

souTHErn suspects

On The Show 09.07.06

A real scoop this week. Our first Hip Hop act on the show - Southern Suspects bring it to the foyer with real instruments as well as some guy on decks. And that is not all as the heros of farm machinery, Nizlopi the dynamic duo join the hop lot.

souTHErn suspects are: Nemma, Silable, LJ, DJ Off-Key, King-Pin, Si-Fi and Hugo. Nemma, Silable and LJ I think are the main writers behind this Brighton based Hip Hop outfit. DJ Off-Key (again, I think) runs the deck side of things. King-Pin and Si-Fi  (again, I think) deal with the production side.

These guys will be the first Hip Hop act we have had on South Live and I must say it is about time. Obviously you will not get the full unleashing of lyrical mastery that they deliver as this is a Sunday early evening show but there will be plenty of solid mental digging around in your head so don’t miss it.

Also those number one stars Nizlopi will be winding their way down to us and how about that for humility. I once did the sound for these guys at a kind of spiritual/ treat yourself well festival near Guildford. Even then I could see that they were normal guys. They spent half of their set just making up songs as they went along and devoting their set to the throng of kids who were there. They were unpretentious and captivating. It is good to see such people get a shot at something bigger.

Sadly I will not be here on Sunday to engineer these two acts as I am off to Spain to help my mate Simon (who did most of the music videos during May Festival here in Brighton) put a roof on a wreck of a house in Spain. Toby will be engineering and meeting the guys first hand.

The demo panel opted to push through the act called Burnthouse on Sunday 2nd with 23.5 out of 30 points – well done to them, and they will arrive on the doorstop before the show next week to wait for their interview when they will tell us what they are up to. Civillian got the extra point for the most listener input.

Demos this week are all female artists:

Doll and the Kicks with a great driving rock number. They hail from Brighton are regular giggers and Hannah who sings has a great live presence.

The Sofa with a funky-soul number is the project name for the writer Nigel Goss the vocalists are Sharon Blackman, Becca Hossany, Nicola Watson and Colette Ridehalgh. They plan to gig in the near future.

Rachel Crouch has headlined in front of 30,000 people at the 2003 International Birdman Rally in Bognor Regis as well as making it to the semi-finals of the UK songwriting Contest.

Listen to the tracks that are up on the demo bash this Sunday 9th July at the top right of the page.
