Show-Ko - Japanese Sit Down Comedy at Marlborough Theatre 21st May

By Lindsey Parkin
The modest but homely Marlborough theatre (it smells of your mums kitchen) served up a simple delight this Sunday lunchtime.

Big and little people alike clapped, sang or laughed along to this delightful blend of song, story, mime and puppetry.

Show-Ko herself dressed in a lush, rustly, pink kimono, kneels on a purple cushion on a small stage, delivering entire worlds.

A global tour is delivered through transformations of a bamboo mat, which in her hands and words is, by turns, Tower Bridge or a Thai temple.

She tells her stories sitting down, using only her voice, small flannel, a fan and your imagination. It's simple and suited to all her audience.

The second person on stage is a little different. A noisy, red-faced, whirlwind of a man in traditional costume re-enacts the triumph of his bodyguard, 'the ninja', over first a red, and then a blue monster.

During this conflagration, they box, wrestle, fly into the audience and two miles into the sky - honestly. It's agile, high tempo and hilarious.

Show-Ko returns with her sidekick Ken with charming humour, a bit of panto slapstick and ventriloquism in a second language, and you guessed it, it's all done sitting down.

Whether kid or no, this is a delightful show and a well-spent hour of anybody's life. If they play again, go and treat yourself to a little sit down.
