Open House of Horrors
We dare you to take part!

Open House of Horrors

By Mary McMillan Sloan
It was a tranquil afternoon in May. The sound of children playing in the warmth of the sunshine filtered through the French windows, bouncing joyfully off the paintings and sculptures in the living room of Celia Side, Open House hostess supreme.

Celia was struggling to explain that credit card payment facilities were not available, deeply regretting having given up French at O level, when a piercing scream shattered her Arts and Crafts world and changed her life forever…

Celia dropped her English/French dictionary and thrust her way through the crowds to the staircase. A sign denoting the upper floors as ‘PRIVATE’ had been cast aside and a woman was slumped at the top of the stairs in a heaving mass.

As Celia approached, the woman raised her head and stared at her. The stranger’s face was frozen in sheer terror but she managed to point towards the bathroom door, unable to speak.

Stepping over her potential customer, Celia put her weight against the bathroom door and turned the handle.  'Could this be any worse than the poo incident of ’98?' she asked herself, as she fell into the room…

Can you identify with Celia and have you had a similar experience as an Open House Host? Or have you been the guest from hell? We would love to hear any funny or mildly alarming stories connected to the Open House Art Trails throughout the festival.
