Ever stolen anything?

Shall thou not steal?

Have you ever stolen anything? If you are a Christian, do you still follow the Ten Commandments? We asked ex crimimal John Williams what he makes of 'Thou Shall Not Steal'...

With the UK's biggest robbery continuing to dominate the news headlines, our faith team wondered how relevant the Commandment 'Thou Shall Not Steal' continues to be.

One man who has a unique perspective on that question is John Williams, who has spent more than 25 years of his life in prison for theft and other crimes.

He spent his childhood in childrens' homes and says he 'never had the sense of ownership of anything'. He felt unable to connect with people and because he was being looked after by charities, felt inferior to other people.

It was a feeling that became compounded when he was first set to prison, where he  mixed with criminals like Reggie Kray and 'Mad Frankie' Fraser.

But John, who now lives in Brighton, was brought up on the Gospels and never lost his faith in Jesus.

"The Jesus figure was the only thing in the world  that I couldn't point a finger at and say 'That was bad, that was negative'. " he said.

"So throughout my thieving career and prisons there was always that one point of light that I understood was goodness personified... for someone like me who could have escaped into bitterness one hundred per cent, that always left that one chink of light..."

John came into speak to John Radford. Hear his fascinating interview by clicking the link below...
