The Desperate Ones

The Desperate Ones

Don't expect light entertainment. You are not listening to radio one. Nothing will be alright. If you have have a free evening this coming Sunday then go to The Joogleberry Playhouse in Brighton and catch this band - but be prepared.

Brel Facts

  • Jacques Brel was Belgian
  • He died of lung cancer in October 1978
  • These are some of the artist who have covered his songs:  Scott Walker, Alex Harvey, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Petula Clark, Shirley Bassey, David Bowie, Nina Simone, Mark Almond, Arno, Leonard Cohen and The Desperate Ones

Picture yourself on a chair in a cafe with bombs going off outside all around. A band starts to play a Brel song - Marieke but it is not as you remember. Not as Brel performed his song. This band are darker than that. Eliza lets herself go. And Ben lets himself go in their rendition of another Brel song 'Ne me quitte pas'. I don't know Brel's music but I imagine he would (if he wasn't dead) be very impressed with the versions that The Desperate Ones perform.

As we only had the one act in this Sunday there are two tracks for you to listen to. 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' with Ben and Eliza sharing main vocal and one of Eliza's own compositions. Enjoy!

Eliza has put me on the door at Joogleberry Playhouse in Brighton where they are gigging next Sunday so providing I can pack up and get away from the session early then that is where I will be going.

The pictures were taken from video clips of the session filmed on Sunday by Eliza's son.
