South Live

Phil Jackson

Get your band on South:Live

So, how can you get your tunes onto South Live? What's the process? Find out with the show's host Phil Jackson.

A few key facts

Ensure that your demo contains your best work

Mark it clearly with all your contact details

Remember we only play local artists; bands  from the counties of Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire or Dorset

We only accept demos on CD

South:Live is all about local music and it gives you a chance to get your music played on radio across the South.

It goes like this...

You send a demo CD to us
We listen to it
You might then get a call from us...
All of the music that you hear on this show will come from local artists, because we only play bands which are from the counties of Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire or Dorset.

We're interested in bands and artists which are unsigned. It's a fact that there are hundreds of great bands across this area - and you will hear many of them on this show.

Q:How do I get my band more PR?

Take a look at the form below - it gives you all you need to get your unsigned band on to the site. We'll list you in our Bands Directory on a site which is visited by thousands of people every day.

Q:Can anyone send a track in?

"Your age doesn't matter; but remember that you will be being judged against musicians who have put a great deal of time and skill into their work. "
Phil Jackson

A:Yes. We welcome all kinds of music from anyone living within our broadcast area. Your age doesn't matter; but remember that you will be being judged against musicians who have put a great deal of time and skill into their work. Do your best - we listen to everything but only the best acts get through. So far we've seen live unplugged performances from The Sands, Roger Davies, Dani Wilde, Cathyrn Stone, Andy Baron and others.

We've also had sets from established local artists like Carleen Anderson, Chris Difford, Tim Booth, Hazel O'Connor, British Sea Power, The LoveGods, and The Levellers.

Our Demo Panel have chewed their way through the hefty postbag that arrives every day - resulting in an on air interview and airplay for local bands Sequoia, Dead! Dead! Dead!, Fuji Heavy, Nothing and Catherine KS.

Q:Will I get any feedback?

A:No. Sorry - but we only feedback to those artists who we pick each week from the mailbag. We just don't have time. So we only ring a band if we want to book thme to play or if we are telling them that they are going to be in the demo panel.
Plus, we speak to local artists who have made it in the business like Arthur Brown and Robin Scott, as well as music industry figures whose tips you can see in our South Live Master Class.

If you want us to listen to your demo - and you've got some original tunes - then you need to send us a CD by post.

Q:Got any useful tips?

A:Always eat a hearty breakfast, ring your parents every now and then and don't try and beat the lights on a skateboard. Other than that, just read this page very carefully and only send your best stuff in. Don't send in half completed stuff; we're not your devoted fans - not yet, anyway.

We don't accept demos in any other format and we don't much like demos that arrive without any information. about who has produced them. So think about your presentation as well as your music.

And then send in your music to South:Live, BBC Southern Counties Radio,40-42 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 8XB. We guarantee to listen to everything that you send.
