The odds against a pure white squirrel being born are 1 in 100,000 so is there something in the water locally? We appear to have more than our fair share in the South!

We want to know just how rare our little white furry friends are. Add your photos and sightings to our White Critters page.

I can't believe that I spotted this article today. Yesterday, as I was driving home, I saw a white animal dash across the street in front of my car. Everything about its movements made me think it was a squirrel - but a white one? Now I know I might not have been seeing things. This spotting was in Great Bookham, Surrey.
Sue Halford

Driving the car between Waltham and Hastingleigh, when in front we saw a white squirrel crossing the road, it ran into the wooded area on the roadside we stopped to watch it climb the tree......

On a trip near to my home in Polegate East Sussex recently I was delighted to spot an albino squirrel, had a friend not been with me I would have doubted my sanity. But there it was, large as life and beautiful. It dashed across a very narrow back road, in front of my car, fortunately I wasn't travelling fast as this is a notorious piece of road, and it leapt into the hedge to our left. What a wonderful moment, I had never heard of albino squirrels until I emailed the Wildlife Trust and it seems they are quite common, but nonetheless very pretty.
Sadly I had no camera with me, and besides it was over in a moment, but will stay in our memories.
Jean Duckworth-Lloyd

We've had Albino squirrels in this village for a few years. Last year a female regularly came and fed in my garden - and once brought a small grey baby with her. This year the one who has turned up here seems to be a male. He is quite tame - and I have taken many photos and video too of him. I am told there are quite a few here in the village but I have never seen more than one at a time. They are true albino's with pink eyes - but unlike white cats do NOT appear to be deaf. We have regularly seen a white squirrel in the copse behind the second green on Redhill Golf Course, in the grounds of East Surrey Hospital. It, or a relative, has been there for at least the five years that we have been playing there. Perhaps it's related to the one at Nutfield? Wendy McLerie
Oxted, Surrey

I have seen one twice this year at the West End of the "Down" near St Francis Close. Bexhill-on -Sea. Near Junction with West Down Rd. It seems to inhabit a very large fir tree there. It's not the first year this has happened but I haven't seen one for some time.

It was early morning in September when I was preparing to go to school when I an white squirrel ran across our drive and up a tree. Later that day when I came home it popped its head out of a bush. My teacher mentioned today an albino squirrel had been seen on the playground of my school 2 miles from my house. Could it be the same one?
Alex age 9

An Albino Squirrel just popped over our back fence (1830 hrs, 05/07/04) - much to our cat's delight. We have never seen this little fellow before. Luckily for it the cat just missed catching hold of it. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photo - too busy chasing off the cat!

I have seen a pure white squirrel today may 12th in my garden at Dragons Green, West Sussex. It was playing very near me with ma and pa, and two other grey babies, not a bit shy either, it had pink eyes, and was a little bit smaller than its brothers or sisters. the funny thing is our house is called Nutkins Copse so perhaps squirrel nutkin is out there somewhere???. this sighting is recorded on my camera and if they come out I will forward a photo to you. it was 7.15a.m. and I stood and watched them play for a good half an hour,(in my nightie and anorak)!! hope this is of interest to you. I was fascinated by it.

I saw an albino squirrel in the Crystal Palace area this morning (4/2/04) in the gardens of some flats just off Farquhar Road. It ran accross the path just a couple of yards in front of me. I went back to the same place a couple of hours later with a camera but could not find it! Looking at the other locations of sightings, it seems that South London is a hotspot for
albino squirrels!
Ashley Prodgers

Amazed this morning to see an all white squirrel crossing the road and scampering up a tree near Biddenden vineyards close to Tenterden. Stopped the car and sat watching with my two daughters. It felt unreal and then very special to witness one of these beautiful animals so close. Will keep the camera to hand for the future.
Mrs Bartlett

We have a white squirrel living in the woods near our home. It has been around for a couple of years and has recently ventured out from the woods into a nearby field where we saw it burying its acorns with such energy and meticulous attention to detail. Wonderful!
Penny and Dean

I have seen what I believe to be a white squirrel living in woodland near my home.
This particular squirrel does not have the pink eyes commonly associated with albino squirrels but brown/black eyes. It was about 8-10 inches long from head to tail. I have never seen one before and am having great difficulty persuading friends that it was a squirrel and not a stoat or weasel or even polecat. Did my eyes deceive me or is this creature real. I would be grateful for any help you can give me on this.
Michaela Dickson
Email us with your suggestions for Michaela.

Editors note: The best way to tell is that weasels are weasily recognisable and stoats are stoatily different....he he he.

There is a white squirrel living in The Wickets (west part) in Burgess Hill. He/She have been there since late summer when we first spotted it. We have some recently taken pictures as well.
Mr MRG

My wife and I both saw an albino squirrel in Beddington Park, Wallington, Sutton in about 1995. Couldn't believe our eyes. Never heard about them again until I saw your item about Persil. I had a camera with me at the time and always regret not getting a photo of it, didn't realise until now they are so rare.
Michael Cowley

Thought you would be the people to tell about a pure white squirrel seen several times in the Farlington area of Portsmouth. It seems this is an unusual animal. Is it rare enough to interest you? I will read your articles on Persil now I have found them.
Matthew Ward
