WALK 1

About the walk:
Circular route. Approximately 2 miles (40 mins if you amble along)

Start and end point:
Whitmoor common carpark on Salt box Road, near to Worplesdon Road.

Directions:
Facing the notice board in the car park, turn right following the path with the barrier until you reach its end.

Walk across the green, past what is known as Alligator Alley towards the railway.

At the railway turn left and follow the fence line path. This may be a bit wet, but is hard underfoot.

Cross the stream and carry on. At the Village Green turn right for the Jolly Farmer Pub, or left to continue the walk.

Otherwise take the tarmac track left, and walk past the big white house which was once owned by Lloyd George.

Keep on the path, past a Y-junction, until you reach a T-junction. Here turn left through an open landscape, and across another bridge over the same stream you first crossed and walk back towards the car park.

WALK 2

About the walk:
Will take you about 40 mins in total. A few stiles to navigate but no steep hills.

Start and end point:
St Mary’s Church to Worplesdon Place Hotel.

Directions:
Start out from St Mary’s Church which is an ancient and modest building, dating back from the 11th century, with works being carried out through until 15th.

Follow the public footpath, cross through the graveyard, and over into the old-field systems, adjacent to Whitmoor Common.

Cross into the common, following the hedge line, past a couple of houses on your left and a huge holly hedge on your right.

Look out for Little Owls, which fly during the day, and have a characteristic bobbing action as they perch on a prominent post.

Keeping straight on, you will notice more trees and less open common. Silver Birch are taking over and works are being undertaken to control them.

At the first junction you could take a left and follow the footpath towards Guildford, but if you carry straight on, you will be rewarded, after a right had turn, with Brook Pond.

Just to keep you on track, look out for the Green marked posts. This open water body, in the middle of the common, known as Ruddles Puddle, was finally restored after a 3-year period of work in 1994.

It’s a great area to sit, watch dragonflies and see the heron catching fish.

Follow the path round again through open heathland. This historic habitat is very precious and is being preserved by hand as grazing at the moment is no longer possible.

The path naturally veers left and you will hit a tarmac road. Do an about turn and head on along through the woodland edge.

At the previously mentioned first junction, take a right, until you get to a gate, veer left up the hill, over the top and down towards The Avenue.

Turn left and you are on the Bagshot Road with only the Worplesdon Place Hotel between you and your car.
