Ditchling
Beacon is just to the north of Brighton in the South Downs.
About the walk:
Length 9kms (5/6 miles). Route - Circular
Start and end point:
Ditchling Beacon National Trust Car Park.
Free parking is available in the National Trust Car Park but be
warned that it gets busy on a Sunday.
Directions:
Head
out of car park in a westerly direction, along the South Downs
Way. Go through the gate into Sussex Wildlife Trust land.
From
Ditchling Beacon, you can get some of the finest views over Sussex
countryside.
Continue
along the top of the scarp, along the South Downs Way, look down
the north facing side which is very steep.
As
you walk through the chalk grassland you’ll see orchids, wild thyme,
wild marjoram and plenty of butterflies.
Still
continuing along the South Downs Way you’ll come to the Jack
and Jill twin windmills. Jill is a white post mill and is open
for cream teas on Sundays between April and September. Jack is a
black windmill but is closed to the public.
From
the windmills, bear southwest, following down to Lower Standean,
an ancient farmstead.
From
here, head back up the path to the South Downs Way.
Once you’re back on the South Downs Way, double back along the path
you started the walk on back to the car park.
