Kaddy Lee-Preston

I was born in Yorkshire but, being from a forces background, I've moved around the world for most of my life.

I spent most of my childhood in the wonderful, but often bizarre, Saudi Arabia, living with scorpions, camels and daily temperatures of 50°C - as well as being evacuated to Egypt during the Gulf War!

I went to boarding school in England, first to an all-girls school in the Malvern Hills and then to wonderful Bradfield College in Berkshire where teachers were more like family than figures of authority.

My love of the weather came from my dad whose fighter pilot days had given him an expansive knowledge of meteorology which he gladly passed on to his cloud-loving curly monster.

This eventually led to a 2:1 Honours degree in Meteorology from Reading University and it seemed the natural path to join the Met Office to be trained as a forecaster. This involved more meteorology (18 months!) and included a rather challenging stint of forecasting at an operational Harrier fighter planes base.

I came to love forecasting but wanted to work with people rather than computers, so broadcast meteorology was the perfect compromise.

My first experience of being in front of the cameras was rather unintentional. I appeared on the lunchtime and evening news back in 1985 tickling the Queen Mother's behind.

In my defence I can only say that the Queen Mum came to visit the Red Arrows RAF base where I was living and being a collector of useless items I happened to notice one of her turquoise feathers had fallen from her hat.

So I whipped in behind her, picked it up and had a quick go at her behind. It wasn't until assembly the next day that I realised the whole shenanigans had been filmed!

I have a strange array of interests - snowboarding, break dancing, cycling, cloud photography, techno music, collecting useless gadgets (the less practical the better) and a rather disturbing obsession with goats.
