Sally
Taylor and Roger Johnson presented the gala ceremony at the De Vere Grand Harbour
Hotel in Southampton which was attended by 200 sports celebrities from around
the region.
In this Olympic Year, some of our medallists from Athens featured
highly amongst the winners and nominations.
Shirley Robertson was the
only woman in team GB to win back to back Golds having won the Europe Class Sailing
in Sydney. She won the Best Sportswoman category and her Yngling crew walked away
with the Female Team of the Year Award.
Ben Ainslie won the Yachtsperson
Award, having won Gold in Finn Class sailing in Athens.
And the Team GB
Sailing Manager Stephen Park walked away with the Manager of the Year Award for
steering the British team to five medals on the water.
The Paralympians'
achievements were also recognised - Bournemouth cyclist Darren Kenny won two gold
medals in Athens - the men's 1km open time trial and he also broke the world record
in the CP3 3km cycling individual pursuit. Kathy Smith from Oxford was part of
the archery team who struck gold. They won the Best Disabled Sportsman and Woman
Awards.
Peter Norfolk won gold to secure Britain's first ever paralympic
tennis medal. He has also recently won his third US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship
title in four years. He added the title of BBC South Sportsman of the Year to
his collection.
Winchester City FC won the Non-League Team of the Year
having won the FA Vase as well as the Wessex League and Cup double.
Bournemouth's
James Hayter was named Footballer of the Year - earlier this year he scored the
fastest ever hat-trick in English football - 2 mins and 20 secs.
And there
was a special award for Mike Smith who retired from presenting BBC Radio Solent's
Non-League Round-up after being with the station since it first went on-air 34
years ago.
Dimitri Mascarenhas won the Cricketer of the Year Award for
helping Hampshire
return to the
top division of the County Championships.
Lymington Sailor Nick Thompson
who became the World Youth Sailing Champion in Laser Class was named Young Sportsperson
of the Year.
The BBC South Unsung Hero Award was picked up by 18 year old
Lee Chaffey for his football coaching work in Whitchurch, Reading.
The
coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award went to Neil Middleditch, manager
of the Poole Pirates - the first team for 40 years to win the speedway league
and cup double in successive seasons. The Pirates also won the Male Team of the
Year Award.
