Sally Taylor and Roger Johnson presented the gala ceremony at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton which was attended by 200 sports celebrities from around the region.

In this Olympic Year, some of our medallists from Athens featured highly amongst the winners and nominations.

Shirley Robertson was the only woman in team GB to win back to back Golds having won the Europe Class Sailing in Sydney. She won the Best Sportswoman category and her Yngling crew walked away with the Female Team of the Year Award.

Ben Ainslie won the Yachtsperson Award, having won Gold in Finn Class sailing in Athens.

And the Team GB Sailing Manager Stephen Park walked away with the Manager of the Year Award for steering the British team to five medals on the water.

The Paralympians' achievements were also recognised - Bournemouth cyclist Darren Kenny won two gold medals in Athens - the men's 1km open time trial and he also broke the world record in the CP3 3km cycling individual pursuit. Kathy Smith from Oxford was part of the archery team who struck gold. They won the Best Disabled Sportsman and Woman Awards.

Peter Norfolk won gold to secure Britain's first ever paralympic tennis medal. He has also recently won his third US Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship title in four years. He added the title of BBC South Sportsman of the Year to his collection.

Winchester City FC won the Non-League Team of the Year having won the FA Vase as well as the Wessex League and Cup double.

Bournemouth's James Hayter was named Footballer of the Year - earlier this year he scored the fastest ever hat-trick in English football - 2 mins and 20 secs.

And there was a special award for Mike Smith who retired from presenting BBC Radio Solent's Non-League Round-up after being with the station since it first went on-air 34 years ago.

Dimitri Mascarenhas won the Cricketer of the Year Award for helping
Hampshire return to the top division of the County Championships.

Lymington Sailor Nick Thompson who became the World Youth Sailing Champion in Laser Class was named Young Sportsperson of the Year.

The BBC South Unsung Hero Award was picked up by 18 year old Lee Chaffey for his football coaching work in Whitchurch, Reading.

The coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award went to Neil Middleditch, manager of the Poole Pirates - the first team for 40 years to win the speedway league and cup double in successive seasons. The Pirates also won the Male Team of the Year Award.

The BBC South Sports Awards will be shown on BBC One oN Wednesday 8th December at 7pm.
