Southampton's
Youth Information Centre has moved into a temporary new home in the
Bargate Centre with plans for a cyber-cafe and information on the
city's youth projects and agencies. |

The Youth
Information Project (YIP) was forced to move after its base in Northam
was ear-marked for demolition.
They were eventually given a new home in a vacant unit of the Bargate
Shopping Centre. The centre gives young people a voice through different
media, including their magazine, 'Hype' and heightens the positive
involvement of young people within the city.

"Older people in particular can have
a stereotypical view, maybe following a bad experience with
one or two young people, but this shows there is something really
good for young people in the city centre." |

The centre
will have informal learning services, including a Cyber cafe where
IT facilities are available as well as information on various youth
projects and agencies.
At a launch party, a special video was shown that had been was produced
by the Youth City 24-seven project.
A team of young video-makers worked with the City Eye project to establish
what their contemporaries thought of the city centre, what was lacking
and what ideas they had for improved facilities.
Priorities included a city centre youth club, an ice rink and an additional
leisure centre while crime and personal safety came out as the issue
young people were most worried about.
YIP will move into a refurbished centre in Millbrook in the Autumn.
