Peter Legate remembered

Peter Legate

Details have been announced of the memorial service for Legate, the Lymington climber who died on Everest last month.

The 38-year old, who was climbing the world's highest mountain to help local charities, will be remembered at a special service at St Johns Church, Hythe on Friday 24th May at 11.30.

A special fund has also been set up at the Natwest Bank in Hythe, to help raise money for the two charities Peter was supporting - Children Say and Naomi House.

Since his death, tributes have also been paid by Peter's friends and colleagues.

Brian Blessed
Brian Blessed, who had supported Peter's bid for Everest, said: "He meant a great deal to me, he was a very, very brave man. But adventure can't be adventure if it's not tinged with danger."

The veteran actor, who is planning a return to the mountain next year, says he will make a special journey to the place where Peter died.

Peter was descending the fixed ropes from Camp Three on the Lhotse face when he fell 200 metres into a crevasse. Mountaineer, Bear Grylls from Dorset spoke to BBC Radio Solent about the one-in-six death rate on the mountain.

Grylls, who is the youngest person to have scaled Everest, said: "It's a very dangerous mountain - it's such a tragedy when you hear these statistics made real. You try and ignore the risks and get on with it and Peter was obviously very posative and gave his everything, but there's nothing you can do when things go against you and do go wrong".

Peter had also been supporting two local charities. Children Say is aiming to install a Multi-sensory Room for children with complex learning difficulties. Naomi House, is a children's hospice based in Sutton Scotney, and provides respite and terminal care.

Hugh Thompson from Naomi House told BBC Southampton: "On behalf of everyone at Naomi House, our thoughts are with Peter's family and friends. He was an inspiration in every sense to all who met him and the news has come as a deep shock to all who knew him. Peter had a very personal relationship with Naomi House, he was not just fundraising for our organisation but also had volunteered within the children's hospice throughout the past year. He was a remarkable man."

Peter had been emailing online diary entries to the BBC Southampton website, and was a regular guest on BBC Radio Solent's breakfast programme presented by Julian Clegg. Listeners and users have been emailing southampton.online@bbc.co.uk with messages of condolence following the news of his death.

The Legate Family:
Margaret and family would like to express their sincere thanks to all of the many friends, neighbours and colleagues for their support, tributes and love following the tragic loss of Peter in pursuit of his dream to climb Everest.

The work for the charities will continue.
Date of Memorial Service to be announced.

Darren Otto:
Dear Family and Friends of Peter Legate,
I wish to send my condolences to you all. I have been struggling with the fear of losing a loved one on the mountain as my sister is currently attempting an ascent of Sagarmatha at this time. Upon hearing of Peter's death I was filled with immense sadness for your terrible loss. We will remember him and honor his adventurous spirit. Namaste Peter.

Robert Lee
It's very difficult to try and find the words that can describe such a brilliant man. He touched a lot of people all over the world and this can be seen only in a tiny amount by these thoughts and condolences. He was a brave, honourable and caring man who made you just feel good when he was there. I worked with Peter and did not know him as well as many of his family and friends but yet I am filled with the deepest sorrow. He will be remembered always.

Tom Baynham, Hythe, Hampshire:
I am shocked and saddened to hear about Peter's tragic death. I worked with Peter for a short time last year at Applemore Recreation Centre whilst he was training to climb Everest. Peter was an inspiration to me and has spurred me onto arranging a trek to Everest Base camp this summer. He made me realise that ambitions are achievable when you try. He will be greatly missed. God Bless.

Sacha Carey, Dorking, Surrey:
I'm so sorry to hear about the accident. I worked for Beer Seller in Leatherhead while Peter overlooked the last few months of the branch before it shut down, he was one of the nicest guys I've ever come across. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be where I am today - he filled me with confidence when I had none and pushed me to better myself - I now have a beautiful two week old boy and a very good job. A year ago I was made redundant and didn't know where to turn, he made me see straight again - he will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

Elisabeth Wadman, Loveland, CO USA:
I was terribly saddened to read of Peter's death yesterday on the Lhotse Face. This tragedy is magnified by the fact that he was trying to use the effort at Everest to do good for those in need. My prayers are with Peter's family, friends, climbing partners and all those touched by his life.

Mike Macdonald and Angie, Southampton:
Pete was a tremendous guy and we all shall miss him dearly, on and off the Rugby Field. Our thoughts and love go out to his family and friends. We can only celebrate having had the privilege of knowing him. Tour Court will never be the same God Bless Pete. xx

Annika Peeters, USA:
I am so sorry for your loss. The news of Mr Legate hit really close to home for me, my father -in-law is his American climbing friend Randall Peeters. I have been checking in to this site periodically for any information regarding the climb and I am deeply saddened by this tragedy.  My heart goes out to all Mr. Legate's friends and family and my prayers are most certainly with you.

Caro and Jim Handley, with children Jess, Claire and Matteo, Lymington:
We were glad to know you as neighbours. We loved your energy, warmth, enthusiasm and courage. We're so sad that we didn't get the chance to know you for longer and to have the celebration party we promised you when you got back. We will remember you.

Phil Allen:
Sorry to hear about the tragic accident, Peter was a brave man and will be missed.

Pete Etheridge, Sway:
I only met you once, but like many others I was touched by your kind and loving nature. You are an inspiration to many. May your spirit soar above us all.

Tammi Taber, USA
From all of us in the USA, we're so sorry for your loss.  Peter was obviously an incredible individual who lived his life to the fullest.  I pray for his family and those that loved him.

Neil Young, Dunfermline:
Pete, you were an inspiration to us all. I, like many others, will remember many happy times in your company and I pray that wherever you are now, you'll know how loved and respected you were by us all. God Bless.

Peter Oates, Vancouver, Canada:
Peter Legate was one of a kind. The world is a poorer place without him. I grew up with Pete and will always remember that he ALWAYS "went for it". Never one to go with the flow Peter was his own boss. My heart goes out to his mum who worked so very hard bringing him up in the world and helped make him into the character that he was. God Bless Pete!

Sadie Miller, Lymington
I didn't know you very well Peter but your determination was always apparent. You will be sorely missed by many, many people but what you have achieved will be remembered too. Be peaceful. x

Scott Jenkins, Hythe:
Pete, I know you can't read this now but I just wanted to say I will miss you and your amazing sense of humour, rugby tours will never quite be the same again.

Glen Howitt, London:
Peter, just heard about what happened. You and I were friends, and you did more than anyone to help me settle into Southampton when I arrived from university. You were a fantastic, genuine bloke. I'm truly sorry. The world is a worse off place now.

Karen and John, Taunton:
So shocked to hear the news earlier this evening. Pete was one in a million, we are privileged to have been his friends.  Our thoughts are with his mum, family and other friends who know just how special a person Pete was. God Bless.

Fenton Gidley, Darien, CT USA:
I am saddened by Peter's story and will contribute what I can to his fund raising recipients. My prayers go out to his loved ones.
