In 1699 Guru Gobind Singh created the Sikh fraternity known as the Khalsa. These men were to live like soldier-saints, committed to the quest for righteousness.

The Guru held a sword in his hand before a crowd of 80,000 and asked if anyone was willing to offer their life for the Sikh faith.
