He says he's been worn down by years of suffering. He was born with a rare bowel complaint and he is usually fed through a tube in his chest. Danny was born with a rare bowel complaint and he is usually fed through a tube in his chest.

It's just been one operation after another, and one huge, huge disapointment after another. And that's the way it's been for 20 years.

Danny has never been able to empty his bowel because of a problem with the nerve endings in his gut. The operations which include 17 colostomies, have failed to solve the problem.

Three years ago, he caught an infection that is resistant to antibiotics. MRSA is incurable and it continuously infects the tube in Danny's chest, making him extremely ill.

His mother, Beverley Dodds, accepts his decision, but she has to keep his painkillers locked in a metal box. "Half of me wants to give him the box...and the other half...wants to protect him."

If she did give Danny the key to the drug box, she could be charged with aiding and abetting a suicide. Beverley and her husband believe that the law should be changed to allow people like Danny to die with dignity.

"There's just got to be a better way, because this is awful," says Beverley.

You can find out more about Danny's plight and the issues surrounding euthanasia tonight on Southern Eye, on BBC2 at 7.30pm.
