City planners in Southampton are considering whether to approve a £90,000 metal sculpture, celebrating a local legend.

Sir Bevois was mentioned in a 16th century love story, he was supposedly buried on a mount to the North of the old town, which became Bevois Mount. His sword, Morglay, is kept at Arundel Castle, in Sussex.

The sculpture is an abstract feature of a sword called "Shear" which slices into Bevois mount at the junction of Thomas Lewis Way and Lodge Road.

It will be made of metal bits of rope - symbolic of local trade. The vertical sculpture will be around 9.45 metres high.

Plans for "Shear" were suggested by local residents and attracted proposals from over eighty artists. It's going to cost £90,000 of government money.

Public arts officer Liz Smith describes "Shear" Audio

Councillor Paul Jenks, Chairman of the Southampton Regeneration Partnership says it is not being funded by the city council.
