Drink driving figures for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have risen above the national average over the Christmas period.

More people got back in their cars due to chaos on the railways

Local police breath tested more than 450 motorists, of which just over 8% were positive; the national average stands at 7%.

Nationally there's also been an increase, leading to calls from senior police officers for tougher powers to deal with persitant drink drivers.

Recent years had seen a fall in numbers - and government campaigns have pulled few punches. Senior police officers are partly blaming chaos on the railways as more people get back in their cars, fed up with constant delays.

Pressure's now likely to increase on the government to introduce stricter penalties for people caught drink-driving.
