Efforts to save the South's warship-building industry will progress this week when Vosper Thornycroft announces plans to bid for more work on the Royal Navy's new type 45 destroyers.

The Navy's ordering three destroyers, but local MP's are lobbying for more work to come to Vospers, rather than BAE shipyards in the North which are the main contractors.

MPs are also keeping up pressure for two new aircraft carriers to be based in Portsmouth. Vospers would benefit from the government order for a new batch of warships worth 1 billion pounds.

One of three new Type 45 destroyers is to be built by Vospers, BAe is also bidding for the work. But If Vospers doesn't get Type 45 - the future is pretty grim. Potentially 650 job losses.

They have already been to London to Lobby their case. If they get the contract their workforce will be doubled with a huge knock on for the local economy.
