The Castaways on Taransay

A Hampshire woman is getting used to life back home after spending a year on the Scottish Island of Taransay as part of the BBC's Castaway 2000 experiment.

Fareham grandmother, Sandy Colbeck spent 2000 on the island with 36 strangers.

Sandy, was previously a Microbiologist Lab Technician from and heavily involved in working with her local amateur dramatics society as a costume maker.

She admitted not to having told her family that she had entered the selection procedure but wanted to "grow old disgracefully" - even getting her hair dyed on the island.

She described the project as a "real adventure" - recreating an extended family, whose members had to rely on each other during the various crises that they encountered.

Now that she has returned to Hampshire, Sandy admits to being changed by the experience.

The "serene and majestic" type of lifestyle that they all enjoyed for the year meant she could have happily stayed there.

The best thing was her fellow castaways - and having the time to make new friends that she will stay in touch with.
