Hunting - who voted for what

{headline}
Fox
An end to fox hunting.

On Wednesday 17th, the House of Commons voted overwhelmingly for an outright ban on hunting with dogs in England and Wales.

The 387 to 174 vote brings the long-debated outlawing on fox-hunting a step closer to becoming law.

This pattern was not echoed in the South. MPs had three options to choose from:

  • an outright ban
  • a new licensing system
  • allow hunting to continue with self-regulation

Here is how they voted:

Option 1 Option 2
Total ban on hunting Hunting to be licenced or Self-regulating
Peter Brand
Liberal Democrat MP
for Isle of Wight
Mark Oaten
Liberal Democrat MP
for Winchester
John Denham
Labour MP
for Southampton Itchen
Peter Viggers

for Gosport
Sandra Gidley
Liberal Democrat MP
for Romsey
Desmond Swayne
Conservative MP
for New Forest West
Alan Whitehead
Labour MP

Julian Lewis

Hunting supporters say they will fight to keep the sport. However, it is unlikely that the ban will become law in this parliamentary session.
