Former Southampton goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has lost his £85,000 damages award after The Sun's challenge to a libel jury verdict over match-fixing claims was upheld.

The Sun argued at the Court of Appeal last year that Grobbelaar accepted cash for match-fixing while at Southampton.

He won the libel damages from the newspaper after a series of articles in 1994, but the tabloid successfully appealed.

The former Zimbabwean international stands to lose the original £85,000 and faces a legal bill in excess of £500,000.

Grobbelaar, 42, from Rudgwick, Sussex, was cleared of match-fixing allegations in the high Court.
