It is certainly one of the more unusual combinations in music - the sassy soul vocalist, stuck on stage with probably the greatest rock guitarist of his generation.

Bernard Butler
Bernard Butler

David McAlmont and Bernard Butler went their separate ways after their original collaboration in the mid-90s - not even exchanging Christmas cards. But time is a great healer and when Bernard started writing new material, he found his old partner in a receptive mood.

Quite simply, the combination of the two is a musical supernova - McAlmont's diva-esque vocals are just stunning, holding high-altitude notes as if it was going out of fashion, while the familiar silhouette of Bernard thrashes out those amazing riffs on his guitar.

The on-stage choreography showed this is real double act, McAlmont making way for Butler to shimmy into the spot light for his guitar breaks, and vice versa.

David even helped out by fanning Bernard with a towel at one point - just incase his fingers caught fire on the fretboard!

The personal chemistry mirrored the clear musical chemistry that made every song an awesome display of musicianship of the highest order.

Song after song from the new album, Bring it Back - Falling, Different Strokes and Sunny Boy, saw David's vocals racing us to the top of the mountain, only to parascend off the summit, caught on the thermals of Bernard's soaring guitar.

A stunning acoustic set as part of the encore included the beautiful Blue.

Surprise of the night was their rocky cover of Take That's Back for Good which the pair have recorded for a charity album.

No surprise about the final number of the night. Their biggest hit to-date and an anthem of positivity - Yes. It's a song that no matter what life has chucked your way, if you've got it in your head, things start looking very much better.

It was a musical smorgasbord, a feast of the best musical styles, delivered with consummate professionalism - top night!
