This
time we headed for the Nexus in Southampton to find out what it
had to offer on a Saturday night.
After
chatting to some friendly doormen and a helpful manager, we were
in. Saturday is Sindrome rock night at the Nexus and resident DJ
Keith is up in his DJ tower looking down on the clubbers, ready
to rock.
 |
| A
girls' night out |
It's
rock in the broadest sense. Keith is blasting out indie rock from
Placebo, stadium-style rock from The Darkness, alternative rock
from Peaches, and good old-fashioned metal from the likes of Gun'n'Roses
and Metallica. All that plus the Foo Fighters, The Mars Volta and
many more besides. You name it, Keith plays it.
It
could cause a problem to have so many different tastes catered for
but the Nexus has such a relaxed atmosphere that everyone has a
good time and thanks to its open-planned layout, if a tune comes
on that's not quite your cup of tea, you can always go to one of
the chillout areas for a sit down and a drink, without feeling like
you're missing out on the action.
 |
| Two
pals with graphic mural behind them |
The
Nexus has had a few facelifts over the years (hands up who remembers
the tree that used to live in the corner by the entrance) and now
it is sporting snazzy graphic murals on its walls, although it is
still a bit shabby round the edges.
It's
also benefitted from slicing the bar into two and installing some
new toilets near the back, although they're very cramped and always
seem to be flooded. Not a good thing to have to negotiate your way
round after a few pints.
Perhaps
the best thing about the Nexus is its casual dress code. You won't
get turned away here for wearing jeans and trainers on a Saturday
night.
 |
| Rocking
on the packed dancefloor |
In
fact, if you are wearing these you'll probably be dressing quite
formally. The diverse music brings in all kinds of characters: goths,
metalheads, indie kids and punks all dance away, side by side. Surprisingly,
it works!
So
hurray for the Nexus! In an ever-growing city, where themed pubs
are taking over and you can be refused admission for wearing the
wrong shoes, it remains a haven for all the alternative music lovers,
which is why they keep coming back in their droves.
Where
shall we go next time? If you've got a club or a DJ you think we
should check out you can e-mail us with all the details at southampton.online@bbc.co.uk.
