tiny Yes, I've been to Breakneck before, and yes, it rocked. Breakneck is hardly Portsmouth's best kept secret anymore, regularly filling South Parade Pier.

This time was different, the anticipation leading up to this one was massive. The headliner was to be none other than Goldie himself - the original Godfather of drum 'n' bass.

Goldie, had never played in the area before and expectations were very high - the biggest name in drum 'n' bass, at the South Coast's premier night.

Would he show? More importantly, would he deliver, or be just another over hyped big name?

Arriving early, the resident spinners SDM and Triple M were already well into their opening set, playing seamlessly on six decks.

The crowd were already well into it - the dancefloor was heaving.

A quick look into the Techno room, saw local boys Bass 2 twiddling the knobs for a well received live set, before handing over to DJ Tod Livingstone, whose blend of funky, bouncy, party techno stepped it up a notch.

Back in the main room as the residents passed over to new Breakneck resident, BBC 1XTRA's Friction. Accompanied by the bouncy SP:MC, the crowd were loving it.

As the midnight hour approached, the tension was mounting. Where was Goldie?

Shortly after 12.15 he took to the stage, accompanied by a blinding light and firework show, the crowd started chanting, and from his first track he didn't disappoint. Heads turned, jaws dropped, the floor burned, for a relentless hour of previously unheard brand new tracks, delivering the future sound of deep Bass, Goldie Metalheadz style.

The atmosphere can only be described as electrifying.

Rumour has it, he commands £4,000 an hour. Big money, but those on the Pier on the night, will say "Money well spent"! He looked extremely calm, confident, and in full control of the appreciative crowd who lapped it up and begged for more.

Even chart stars Kosheen were spotted in the crowd, after their gig up the road finished.

Goldie was mobbed coming off stage, but still kept his cool and seemed happy enough shaking hands and signing autographs. Nobody had a bad word to say about the charismatic, secretive star.

Back in the Techno room, Mark E.G had the crowd set to manic. Both rooms were seemingly very busy all night.

Another great night for Breakneck, and the South Coast club scene. The only question left being, how on Earth can they top this?
