New at The Wedge |

With
a queue of fans lined up outside the Wedgewood Rooms hours before
the doors opened - it could only mean one thing... Brand New were
in town, BBC Southampton's Indy Almroth-Wright went to see what all
the fuss was about. |

It's
freezing cold, snow is forecast and my teeth are chattering, but
the line of fans snaking back from the door of The Wedge are too
busy talking about Brand New to notice either the temperature or
the fact that the doors won't open for at least another hour.

The
gig sold out weeks ago and judging by the crowd, this quartet of
twenty-something emo-rockers from Long Island are an extremely hot
band.
The
lads came on stage to a rapturous welcome and launched into their
set. The songs are emotional tales of heartbreak with energetic,
belting, sing-along choruses.
The teenage crowd bounced along gently as the first few songs warmed
them up, and then flailing arms and pairs of feet (generally with
one Converse missing) pass you by as the crowd surfing gets underway.

At
some points you can hardly hear Jesse because the crowd (who've
taken the time to learn every single word of every single song)
are screaming the lyrics back so loud.
Brand New are a no-nonsense band, they don't put on a 'performance'
as such or have any gimics, they simply have a great bunch of songs
and bucketfuls of talent.
I couldn't quite put my finger on what their magic was but one thing's
for sure if they grow with their already devoted fans their glory
won't fade.
