After a short tour with Auf Der Maur the lads have jumped straight back on the tour bus with Norwegian rock n' roll outfit Span which brought them to The Wedge this week.

The rock trio strolled onto the stage to a warm welcome from the crowd and kicked off by belting out Motorhead - a huge, dirty but melodic rock tune.

Matt Brobin

Their music is a step away from everything else around - you don't get a two and a half or three minute pop/rock tune from these guys, it's more like a seven minute epic slab.

Their second song is the infectious rock melody Neon, the first single from their self-titled album. The song ends in a distorted, energetic frenzy with Neil grabbing one of Matt's drum sticks to play his bass.

Amplifier have been compared to just about everyone from Soundgarden to Nirvana and Led Zep, but the truth is they don't actually sound like anyone.

However, you can't help but try and put your finger on their sound - if I had to sum it up I'd say Audioslave, Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains. But
I also found myself comparing them to Led Zep partly due to the long, beautifully crafted songs and partly due to the way Matt drums.

In this band the drums are an instrument not just a back beat - Matt plays relaxed arrangements in a style similar to John Bonham - live he's in the driving seat.

With such long songs they'd only got through about five before
it was time to go. They finished with Airborne a whopping space-rock tune which left us all singing the catchy chorus "it's time to fly".

Amplifier are a down to earth band that have all the right ingredients and chemistry to be massive - but what did you think of Amplifier? Have your say on our Music Message Board.
