FACTS

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later.

Traditionally all financial matters, including debts and outstanding taxes, have to settled by the new year.

The traditional foods eaten at new Year depends on whether you're from south China - sticky-sweet glutinous rice pudding called nian gao - or the north - steamed dumpling called jiaozi (or djiaozi).

tiny The Chinese Lunar New Year is the longest chronological record in history, dating from 2600 BC. The calendar names each of the twelve years after an animal. Each has its own distinctive set of characteristics.

According to legend, Lord Buddha called all the animals to come to him before he departed from earth. Only twelve came to bid him farewell and he rewarded them by naming a year after each one in the order they arrived.

The Chinese believe the animal ruling the year in which a person is born has an influence on personality: "This is the animal that hides in your heart."
