Our own travel bug - the little red hippo
tiny
The little red hippo
BBC South's little red hippo is a travel bug
tiny The little red hippo used to travel with TV presenter Chris Packham.

Now he's become a 'travel bug' and hides in geocaches hoping that finders will take him with them to the next cache they visit.

FACTS
tiny

Our little red hippo was inspired by another stuffed geocacher, called Gulliver the bear. Gulliver has his own website

The Hippopotamus was named so by the Greeks. It means "river horse".

Hippos can close their ears and nostrils so that water doesn't leak in when they go underwater.

A group of hippos is called a "bloat".

Hippos are the third largest land animal, after elephants and rhinos.

Our little red hippo is on his travels. He's out there somewhere, hiding in a geocache, waiting for a finder to move him on to a new cache.

He began his journey with wildlife expert and Inside Out presenter Chris Packham. Chris took him around the world whilst filming for TV shows.

We'll track the hippo's progress here on this page, updating each time a photo arrives from a geocacher who has helped him on his way.

Chris kicks off our hippo travel diary with a few pictures from places they visited together:

Kangaroo
"This was taken in an Australian wildlife park. We were filming for a show called X-Creatures and the kangaroo was in a sort of animal hospital - it had been hit by a vehicle."

Orang Kubu tribe
"This tribe is called the Orang Kubu. There were only 35 of them left at that time, in Northern Sumatra. They're hunter gatherers - it was an extraordinary experience. The little girl at the front was the youngest."

Nepalese rice farmer
"We were planting rice in a Nepalese paddy field and everybody was in the mood for a bit of fun!"
