Welcome to Soundstart
In 2003 BBC Radio Drama celebrated both the fiftieth anniversary of what is now the annual Carleton Hobbs Bursary Award, and the first year of a new acting initiative, the Norman Beaton Fellowship.
Together these two radio awards are celebrated under Radio Drama’s umbrella title for its acting initiatives : (((soundstart))).
In 2003 via these two bursaries, Radio Drama welcomed seven new actors to six-month contracts with the Radio Drama Company.

The Carleton Hobbs Bursary Award
A competition aimed at students from accredited drama schools across the country, it offers the winners the opportunity to become part of the next season's Radio Drama company.

Aimed at actors from non-traditional training backgrounds and particularly to entrants from groups currently under-represented in Radio Drama. The theatres participating in 2012 are now being confirmed.
