Third Age of Spirituality

Presented by Pam Rhodes

General:

At the age of 76, John Lynes decided to start a new life as a peace keeper in the Middle East. He's just one of the people we meet as Pam Rhodes explores the wisdom and spiritual insights that can come with age. The songs and hymns, sung by Sir Willard White and the Exultate Singers, include Lord For The Years, All Through The Night and King Of Glory, King Of Peace.

Interviews:

John Lynes
John is 80 years old and since 2004, he has been a full-time member of the Christian Peacemaker Teams in Hebron. The team goes out every day doing patrols in places where conflict is likely to occur, showing an impartial concern for ordinary people caught up in the conflict. Christian Peacemaker Teams' aim is to encourage Christians to devote the same discipline and self-sacrifice to nonviolent peacemaking that armies devote to war. Their website is www.cpt.org

Daphne Wallace
Daphne is a retired psychiatrist who had specialised in the care and treatment of elderly patients, particularly those suffering from dementia. Three years ago, she noticed changes in herself and was herself diagnosed with vascular dementia. The diagnosis made Daphne re-think the best use of her time and changed her priorities.

Rev Tom Gordon
Tom works as a chaplain at the Marie Curie Hospice in Edinburgh. His role is to help people facing the end of their lives and support them through that process, helping them to find peace of mind and to die "a good death". The website for Marie Curie Cancer Care www.mariecurie.org.uk

Biggin Hill Christian Fellowship
This Fellowship offers a regular Monday lunch for elderly people, during which they discuss issues of faith. The content of the discussions is based on the well-known Alpha course. The church's website is: www.bhcf.org.uk and more information about Alpha can be found at www.alpha.org

The Most Rev. David Hope
David is a retired Archbishop of York who has found that as he gets older, he is working towards a greater simplicity in his faith, and is looking for a spirituality that is less encumbered. Having more time on his hands since his retirement, he now re-visits the things that inspired him during his earlier faith journey and is discovering new insights.

EXULTATE SINGERS
Exultate Singers is an accomplished chamber choir, based in Bristol in the South West of England. It was founded by its conductor, David Ogden, in September 2002 to sing Sunday Morning Worship in a live broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and since then has given many concerts, several more radio broadcasts and has appeared on BBC television.
The choir released its debut CD in December 2005. Entitled Visions of Peace, it brings together some of the pieces that have inspired audiences at Exultate Singers' concerts and broadcasts. It was featured on BBC Radio 3's programme, The Choir.
Highlights include a performance of Elgar's Dream of Gerontius with City of Bristol Choir and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; the first South West performance of James MacMillan's demanding work for choir and string orchestra, Seven Last Words From The Cross, and a live broadcast on BBC Radio 4 of Duke Ellington's Sacred Concert from St Martin-in-the-Fields in London with the Big Buzzard Boogie Band.
The choir's repertoire is varied, ranging from Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary music, spirituals and jazz.
