Songs of Praise: Rochester Cathedral programme 3

Presented by Pam Rhodes

General:
Rochester Cathedral began life in 604 AD as a monastic community. Over its long history the cathedral's first main building of 1083 has evolved from its Norman foundations into a Victorian masterpiece. The building, and its treasure trove of historic art and architecture, has been an inspiration to generations of worshippers and visitors. For more information visit their website.

Bob Ratcliffe
Pam is shown some of the Cathedral's architectural points of interest by Bob Ratcliffe, one of the Cathedral Guides. She discovers how Norman builders put in a 'temporary' buttress in the 1400s - and its still there! Bob shows her one of the oldest doors in England dating from the 11th Century complete with original ironwork; and point out the George Gilbert Scott Organ restoration of the 19th Century.

Helen Bradshaw
The Cathedral's Education Office organises visits for 17,000 children every year. One of the staff Helen Bradshaw, dresses the children in Monks' costumes and teaches them the Rule of Benedict. The children give us their opinions on the monks' fashion sense, and their efforts to remember the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Helen herself has been inspired by the Benedictine rules, and spends time in the Cathedral Gardens reflecting on them. For more information see www.rochestercathedral.org/education

The Very Rev. Adrian Newman
One of the main functions of a cathedral is its worship. As well as large team of clergy, the Cathedral has nearly 400 volunteers who help with every aspect of it. The Dean, the Very Rev Adrian Newman explains how the atmosphere is "a little bit like Orthodox worship", and we hear from a Welcomer, a Steward and a Bible reader.

Theresa Harrison
Theresa Harrison worked next door to the Cathedral, at the Diocese of Rochester offices, for fifteen years before everything changed. On 7th July 2005 her daughter Susan lost a leg in the London tube train bombs. Theresa explains how she was overwhelmed by cards and letters from people at the Cathedral, and how it led to her finding faith. Having never regularly come into the cathedral, she now uses it regularly to light a candle to remember those who experiencing suffering.
