| Christine Pickering
Christine Pickering has been doing yoga for over thirty years. She started going to classes after the birth of her first child and found it really beneficial to her health. She then went on to become a Yoga Teacher (and a teacher of Yoga Teachers). Yoga gave her a feeling that she could deal with any problem that life threw at her - a real sense of invincibility. Until she was diagnosed with cancer; when she realised that she needed to trust God more rather than relying on her own strength. During her illness she also experienced a feeling of courage which she believes came from people praying for her. As her faith came alive Christine felt she would have to choose between it and Yoga because there was a feeling that somehow Yoga incompatible with Christianity. But Christine felt that because she had trained in it and enjoyed the benefits of it this could not be the case. She found a way of combining the two through what she calls Christian Yoga. She chooses passages from the Bible and Prayers and uses the Yoga movements to match the words as she recites them in her head. She finds this way the words have more meaning. She also uses the exercises as a preparation for Christian Meditation. Christine Walmsley Christine Walmsley works for the NHS North Yorkshire Stop Smoking Service and her job is to give advice, information and help to people who want to quit smoking. Her own father died from Lung Cancer through smoking. She's always been interested in helping people before they become ill. She feels empathy for people who smoke because they have experienced family crisis or rejection in their life. She was sent to an orphanage when she was just a year old, because her mother had died and her father couldn't cope. She felt rejected and then later in her adult life her first marriage didn't work out. Although she read all sorts of self help books it was only when she began to read the Bible with the help of some Bible Reading notes called Daily Bread that she discovered that God loved her and that she mattered. Instead of feeling a victim she began to fill up with love. She feels that her Christian faith really affects the way she tackles her job and helps people who are trying to quit smoking. She'd tried all sorts of diets and had sometimes been successful in losing the weight but then would always put the weight back on. Her size was an embarrassment to her - especially as she and her husband were missionaries and were often standing in front of large groups of people teaching and preaching. Then four years ago she and her husband returned early from a missionary placement in Africa which hadn't worked out. Feeling a failure and wondering what the future held she began to 'comfort eat' and put on 20 pounds over 2 months. Sue realised she was at a crisis point and needed to do something. She also realised in a new way that she was a steward of her body and decided to submit her over-eating to God. She realised that throughout her life she had eaten for all sorts of reasons other than physical hunger - eg. comfort eating, getting value for money, feeling that everything on the plate had to be eaten up. She began to find help in the Bible about things like temptation and greed as well as issues such as low self esteem and even stress. She began to eat only when she was physically hungry rather than for non-physiological reasons and for the first time in her life she not only lost weight but kept the weight off. She wanted to share what she had discovered and now runs a Biblically based, diet free programme called Fit For Life Forever combing biblical principles and practical advice to show how people can achieve their weight goals and enjoy a fit and healthy life. You can find out more about the Seminars and Workshops Sue runs all over the country through her website: www.fitforlifeforever.org She has also published a book called How to Stop Dieting and Start Living published by Kingsway Publications. Acorn's three main areas of Ministry are Healing, Listening and Reconciliation. Russ Parker is passionate about 'Christian Healing' and has a particular interest in Dreams. He believes that dreams are a window on people's lives and that sometimes they are about stuff that people cannot fix from the past and which they might be trying to hide or run away from. Russ listens to people's dreams, and finds out about the feelings they are experiencing in the dream and whether the person has ever experienced a similar feeling (whether it be fear, anger etc) in their waking life. By building a bridge to something that actually happened that the dream is a running commentary on he's able to help the person to identify the issue that's bothering them and with the help of God and their own decisions to confront those things and overcome them and change them.
