| For Epiphany Sunday, Aled Jones discovers what school children think about the Christmas story of the wise men and meets three people with their own priceless gifts including a deaf musician who's just been awarded an OBE for services to music.
There's music from the Bradford Youth Choir, Aled performs a new song by the writers of You Raise Me Up and also joins school choirs from West Yorkshire in Leeds Cathedral for some suitably seasonal songs including We Three Kings, Simple Gifts and Hail Redeemer, King Divine. The location for our Outside Broadcast was Leeds Cathedral. Cathedral House Great George St Leeds LS2 8BE Tel: 0113 245 4545 Email: cathedral@dioceseofleeds.org.uk Website: dioceseofleeds.org.uk/cathedral Our conductor was Gordon Stewart and our Music Adviser Geoff Ellerby. |
| DANNIE FIRTH
Dannie Firth speaks about the gift of faith and inner peace. He set up the Wednesday Word charitable trust, an organisation he describes as "a mission to families, whose primary aim is to spread the Gospel and bring families together in the love of Christ; an antidote to family breakdown". The trust came about following the loss of Dannie's daughter Danielle, who died just before her 1st birthday following problems with her heart and lungs. During Danielle's illness Dannie and his family found a new depth of Christian faith through prayer and reading the Bible, and decided they wanted to pass on this gift of faith to others through The Wednesday Word. For more information visit: wednesdayword.org LAURA FRANCE-HODGKINSON Laura France-Hodgkinson speaks about the gift of children. She works full time for Kids Klub Leeds, a new kind of Sunday School for children from the inner city of Leeds. She talks about the gift of friendship and how her work has brought her into contact with children like Kenny, with whom she has become good friends. For more information see kidzklubleeds.org.uk PAUL WHITTAKER Paul Whittaker OBE speaks about the gift of music. He is an Oxford music graduate who learned to play the piano and organ, and sing in choirs, despite being profoundly deaf. He achieved his childhood ambition to teach other deaf children to experience music. His OBE was for services to music, not services to the deaf. For more information about his work, see matd.org.uk THE NATIVITY The young nativity performers are from St Patrick's School in Leeds. Aled visits them as they explore some of the worldwide Epiphany customs. We hear what happens in Germany and Mexico and discover what kind of gifts the year 6 children would give to Jesus today. |
