Songs of Praise factsheet for Sunday 5 March 2006

BEREAVEMENT

Presented by SALLY MAGNUSSON

General:
Sally Magnusson explores one of the most common and painful of human experiences: bereavement. She hears some moving stories of how people have coped with the death of a loved one and introduces inspirational music, including a song from Hayley Westenra. The hymns include Be still, my soul, The Lord bless you and keep you, God is love, and Abide with me.

Interviews:
 Revd Dr Steve Griffiths
Steve's wife Clair died whilst in her 30s, of a brain tumour, in 2001. After her diagnosis, she lived for about 7 years, though they both knew that eventually the tumour would take her life. Steve has since remarried. He wrote his book 'God of the Valley' partly while Clair was ill and completed it in the months after she died, and a friend urged him to publish it. He also lost his sister, Jackie, shortly before Clair died.

The book "God of the Valley - A Journey Through Grief" is published by HarperCollins.

Sybil Ramsey
Sybil lost her husband in 1992 after 46 years of marriage. Towards the end of his life, Al's health deteriorated and he eventually suffered a series of strokes and died of pneumonia. Sybil stayed in the same house after that for many years, as memories of Al were in that house. Only 2 years ago she decided to move to a bungalow, which was a huge step for her to take. Her journey of bereavement has been very much about learning to do things on her own, trusting her own judgement, as she had always relied on Al for help.

Sarah Deriaz
Sarah's little boy Joshua died 4 years ago from a brain tumour at the age of 8. Sarah and her husband have found the following charity of enormous help to them:-
