Steve's wife Clair died whilst in her 30s, of a brain tumour, in 2001. After her diagnosis, she lived for about 7 years, though they both knew that eventually the tumour would take her life. Steve has since remarried. He wrote his book 'God of the Valley' partly while Clair was ill and completed it in the months after she died, and a friend urged him to publish it. He also lost his sister, Jackie, shortly before Clair died. The book "God of the Valley - A Journey Through Grief" is published by HarperCollins. Towards the end of his life, Al's health deteriorated and he eventually suffered a series of strokes and died of pneumonia. Sybil stayed in the same house after that for many years, as memories of Al were in that house. Only 2 years ago she decided to move to a bungalow, which was a huge step for her to take. Her journey of bereavement has been very much about learning to do things on her own, trusting her own judgement, as she had always relied on Al for help.
