Songs of Praise factsheet for Sunday 6 November 2005

Songs of Praise - Life changes

Presented by Pam Rhodes

General:
Pam Rhodes meets 5 people who have made surprising and risky decisions about their lives because of their Christian faith. They talk about how their relationship with God has become far more profound, and their lives much richer because of the life changes they have made.

Interviews:
 PAUL LUFKIN
Paul Lufkin worked in the City with ARC Associates doing investment banking and consulting. After going on an Alpha Course his faith came alive and he realised that God was the most important thing, not money. Paul now teaches at St Michael's Church of England Primary School in Southfields, London. Tel: 0208 874 7786

CHARLOTTE LOBB
Charlotte loved the outdoors - she was passionate about climbing and other sports. She got ME after University which meant she was bed ridden for 3 years. She had to change her career plans and wasn't able to train as an Outdoor Instructor for Children with Special Needs. Whilst bedridden her relationship with God became far more profound - she discovered God through his creation. She looked through her window for a couple of hours every day and saw the trees and the birds and the sky.

She visited Holy Island - Lindisfarne - the Cradle of Christianity. Aiden (one of the Celtic Saints) went there and founded a Monastery. The Celtic Saints worshipped God through creation. She loved the beauty of the Island and the rhythm of life there.

She joined the Community of Aiden and Hilda - a scattered community - and works at it's Mother House (a Retreat House) on the Island.

LEN AND VERA RUSSELL
Len and Vera ran various family businesses over 30 years - including a TV and Electrical repair shop.

After they became Christians they felt that God had something for them to do. After much prayer they found out about the Africa Inland Mission - an international missionary organisation. So they sold their business and went to Bible College in Birmingham (The Birmingham Bible Institute). Then they went out to Kenya 14 years ago. Initially they worked at a Vocational Training Centre in Mombasa for Refugees who had come to Kenya from other African countries. Today they work with the D'robo Tribe - a scattered tribe of 20,000 who live in remote parts of Kenya.

They visit tribal villages bringing the Christian message and also support the many churches which have been founded in the mountains by bringing the Elders of the churches down to their Training Centre at Naivasha.

MARK ROWAN
Mark is an ex con who was in and out of prison for 15 years. He left home when he was very young and went into Care. He started taking drugs at a young age and eventually became a heroin addict. To support his addiction he committed all sorts of crimes - burgling houses and factories. His life was one of crime, violence, drugs and ear.

On his last prison sentence he went to the Prison Chapel and became a Christian. His whole life changed. He now works as a Security Guard in a Shop in his home town and has recently married. He also goes back into Prisons to speak to prisoners about what God has done in his life and about kicking his drug addiction.
