A team
of 22 firefighters from Somerset are preparing travel to the Big
Apple to play a football match against the New York Fire Department.
The
game is being played to raise money for relatives of firefighters
who lost their lives in the Twin Towers terrorist attack.
BBC
Somerset Sound's Voices team has come to the aid of the
footballers.
The
team had been given just about everything needed for the trip to
the States by local companies, but called our Voices actionline
to ask if we could find a set of tour shirts.
Within
hours of Andy Burridge's appearance on air, a Bridgwater drinks'
manufacturer contacted the radio station to offer help.
Now
the team are being kitted out with smart light blue T-shirts, which
will carry the logo of an apple to match the symbol of New York
- the Big Apple.
A celebrity
football match was held last October in Somerset to raise money
for the 9/11 fund.
The
return fixture was agreed following the game, which was attended
by three firefighters from New York who'd flown over especially
to be in the crowd.
The
firefighters, who are making the trip in their own time and paying
their own travel and accommodation costs, will fly out on 30 May.
During
their four-day stay in New York, they'll visit Ground Zero and lay
flowers as a tribute to West country people who died in the tragedy.
