Presenters and Reporters
Alex Gale produces the Saturday Breakfast show with Simon Parkin. Find out more about him.
At the age of 18, after receiving what Alex calls 'grubby' A-level results, he was living out of a rucksack, travelling around the Middle East.
"That really was an experience. Yes, there was a lot of danger, and I saw things at the time I wish I hadn't, but it made me who I am today. I grew up very quickly on those travels, and although I'm sure my mum wouldn't want me to, I'd do it all again!"
He returned to his second home of north London (his first being Burnham-on-Sea) several years later, where he worked in London's west end. It was here he met his wife Sacha whilst working in a wine bar.
"It really was a case of love at first sight. You see it happen in the movies, and never expect it to happen to you."
Alex then gave up the hectic life of London to come home to Somerset.
"We decided a family was what we wanted, and what better place to raise a child than in Somerset. Running along the beach at Burnham with my daughter Lilli reminds me so much of my own childhood."
Alex was bitten by the media bug when he was living in the Canary Islands; he was asked to write for a UK-based national newspaper, and was hooked.
"I loved meeting people who had a story to tell. I also found that I could combine my passions of writing and photography.
"Back in the UK I was listening more and more to the radio, and one day popped into BBC Somerset Sound to ask how I could get involved."
A couple of weeks later, Alex was a regular assistant on the Afternoon Show with Adam Thomas, and from there worked on the Morning Show with Jo Phillips, and was then asked to team up again with Adam on the Saturday Breakfast Show.
"I was absolutely terrified the first time I was put in front of the microphone! But the listeners were gentle with me, and my confidence grew."
Alex worked on Somerset's Big Breakfast during the week and now he produces the Saturday Breakfast show with Simon Parkin.
"Simon is great fun, and although there is a part of your brain that says getting up on a Saturday at 5am is just wrong, I wake up excited can't wait to get in.
"I never know what to expect with him! He is a genuinely funny guy.
"But with Simon being a Man Utd fan and me supporting Arsenal, there should be some interesting banter during the football season!"
Alex is also something of an expert in American sports, having recently set up the first UK-based US sports website dedicated to serving British based fans interests. Around the time of the Super Bowl you're quite likely to hear his expert opinions on BBC Five Live as well as BBC Somerset!
