Tony Benn joined the Labour Party in 1943, and became member
of the NEC (National Executive Council) in 1959 until 1960,
and then again from 1962-93 (Chairman between 1971-72).

He was also Postmaster General between 1964-66. He stood for
the Labour Party leadership in 1976 and 1988, and for Deputy
Leadership in 1971 and 1981. Tony Benn has also been a Member
of Parliament for Bristol (1950-60 and 1963-83).
