Wellington Park

Somerset's top parks

Seven parks in Somerset have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award which recognises the best parks in the country.

Green Flag Parks

Uphill Hill, Weston-super-Mare

Apex Leisure & Wildlife Park, Burnham-on-Sea

Ham Hill Country Park, Montacute

Yeovil Country Park, Yeovil

Victoria Park, Taunton

Vivary Park, Taunton

Wellington Park, Wellington

The awards are run on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their flags.

The flags represent the high standard of park management. The judges assess the parks on eight criteria: whether the park is a welcoming place, healthy, safe and secure, well maintained and clean.

They also look at sustainability, conservation and heritage, community involvement, marketing and management.

Grade II listed Wellington Park, is one of only seven sites to be accorded the Heritage Site Accreditation.

The park was designed by the renowned landscape gardener, ‘Meyer’ and deemed by the judges to be an excellent example of an Edwardian park.

"We are, of course, delighted to follow up last year's success, and should thank those in the Parks department who have worked so hard to create such excellent results," said councillor Richard Lees, executive councillor for Leisure, Arts and Culture.

"Wellington, Vivary and Victoria all mean a great deal to their local community and undoubtedly raise the quality of life."
