Raph from Relentless
Raph from Relentless

Meet Relentless from Bruton, Shepton Montague and Wincanton. They play metal riffs with hardcore lyrics, crushing beatdowns, silent pauses and speed solos when James is allowed.

Who are Relentless?

Raph Govard on vocals; Alex Merron on drums; Josh Martin on bass; James Millz on lead guitar; and Steve Crabb on rhythm guitar.

Where in Somerset are you from?

James from Relentless

Bruton, Shepton Montague and Wincanton

When did you form?

About March 2006

How did you get together?

Alex was playing a gig with Mugshot at a school talent show, which James was also playing in.

James didn't have a drummer and so asked Alex to play for him. They had about 10 minutes to practice - James' act came out so good, that they formed a band together with friend Josh Martin playing bass, and Kieran Dudden on vocals.

Alex from Relentless

Later on, we recruited Steve Crabb to play rhythm guitar.

Recently, Raphiel Govard replaced Kieran on vocals resulting in our current, and hopefully permanent, lineup.

How would you describe your music?

Metal riffs with hardcore lyrics, or in some songs hardcore riffs with metal lyrics, with crushing beatdowns, silent pauses and speed solos when James is allowed.

How did the band gets its name?

We were originally called Valium Kalibur, which was the result of James and Alex looking through drugs leaflets! But we soon thought to ourselves that it was a very poor name, and so started a debate to change it.

Steve from Relentless

At one time, we were going to be called Headrush - which was the name of James' band within school that didn't last too long. But we got Relentless whilst drinking an energy drink called Relentless.

Who are your musical influences?

All of us are either influenced by hardcore or metal bands such as Madball, Sworn Enemy, Pantera and Slayer.

Alex and James don't mind a dash of jazz and blues on the side, but not in Relentless thanks.

What is your most memorable gig so far?

Josh from Relenless

Our first gig (with Kieran) at Sexey's School metal night for leukaemia research. Nobody had ever heard us before and we got a moshpit!

Where would you most like to play?

Anywhere with a great crowd that'll wreak havoc to our music. Or a huge festival like Download.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

  • James is the youngest member of the band and is the lankiest (extremely lanky)
  • Raph is a black man
  • Steve looks pretty hardcore, but he's metal at heart (his favourite band is Motorhead)
  • Alex can play any instrument (he used to play trumpet!)
  • Josh has only been playing bass for just over a year, and he can play anything we throw at him
