Andrew met up with Pete Phillips from Burnham BMX Club ahead of the opening races of the 2006 National BMX Series, which took place in Burnham and Cheddar in May. So, just how big is BMX in Somerset? "At the moment, I'd say Somerset is the main county in the UK for BMX," Pete told Andrew. "We've got two of the best tracks in the country, which have already been documented by the British Cycling Federation.

"Here in Cheddar, we have the best all-round facility for any big event, such as the European Championships which will be here in July." What about getting involved in the sport? Is it easy to become a BMX rider? "The club at Burnham is open to any newcomer," says Pete. "If you have a BMX or a mountain bike and you have protective clothing, you can just turn up to one of our nights, and then think about joining the club if you like it. "The club travels all over England, as well as Europe, and we have three of the best UK riders - Charlie and Liam Phillips, and Marcus Bloomfield who are in the Olympic team - in the club too."
