Musical notes

Oriole

They play acoustic, jazz-styled pop and would most like to play on an island in the Caribbean - there doesn't have to be anyone there, they just really need a holiday. Meet Oriole from Bath.

Who are Oriole?

Sophie Ball on lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Niena Patrick on backing vocals; Ben Van de Geyn on lead guitar; Abner Perez on keyboards; and Daniel Perez on percussion.

Where in Somerset are you from?

Bath

When did you form?

January 2005

How did you get together?

We met at Bath Spa University, where we all study commercial music.

How would you describe your music?

Acoustic, jazz-styled pop

How did the band gets its name?

Oriole is from a song lyric written by Sophie - it's from the song You Should Know.

Who are your musical influences?

There are far too many to mention, but we sound a lot like Carole King, Aimee Mann, Amy Winehouse and Norah Jones.

What is your most memorable gig so far?

In Brighton, at the Joogleberry Playhouse - Sophie's homecoming gig. There was a fantastic atmosphere and we went down really well.

Where would you most like to play?

On an island in the Caribbean. There doesn't have to be anyone there, we just really need a holiday.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

Sophie was a finalist of the Musicians Benevolent Fund Songwriting Awards 2005 in London.
