On board HMS Somerset

BBC Somerset Sound's Andrew Enever was on board HMS Somerset for her final voyage of 2006. Listen back to his exclusive coverage of what life is like for the ship's company.

Most recently deployed in providing maritime security off Iraq and in the Mediterranean, the Royal Navy Frigate sailed from Plymouth to Scotland in April 2006 to undergo her first major refit in 10 years.

Andrew Enever broadcast live on BBC Somerset Sound from on board HMS Somerset.

By clicking on the audio links below, you can listen back to Commanding Officer David Burns talking about the ship as she started her journey from Plymouth.

Listen to what happened on board as the journey progressed, including the performance tests that have to be carried out to check that the ship is in good working order:

You can hear the ship's chaplain talking about how he offers support to the crew and officers by clicking on the audio link below.

Listen also to how the all-important chef goes about feeding those hungry sailors, how 45 men manage to sleep in one mess (!), and how the crew keep fit whilst on board:

There aren't any emergency services to call on when the ship's at sea, so what do the ship's company do if there's a fire on board? Find out by clicking on the audio link below:

You can also hear about HMS Somerset's detour to Scarborough, pirates on the high seas, and her final moments as she approaches Scotland.
