Review: The Answer

Daniel Thomas
The Answer, Durban Poison, and The Night Stars played at the Bridgwater Palace on 30 March, 2006. BBC Somerset reviewer Daniel Thomas went along to the gig to check it out.

Despite The Answer blowing up amps on previous nights of their current UK tour, their gig in Bridgwater was just as explosive from start to finish.

Opening the night with a bang was Bristol band The Night Stars. Their unique mixture of sounds has not only gained them high-profile support slots, most notably with mainstream chart act Maximo Park, but a widespread fan base in the local area.

Their great live sound was noticeable right from the go, as the audience in the Bridgwater Palace immediately began to take notice.

The Night Stars provided an excellent warm-up act, and set the standards high for the remainder of the night.

Next on the bill was Durban Poison, who, with youth on their side, put in a really strong performance. Drawing the night's first big crowd to the front, the London-based four-piece ripped through their set in style, and really pleased their onlookers.

The night went to the next level during Durban Poison's set, and the audience was beginning to grow in anticipation for the night's headliners.

Both The Night Stars and Durban Poison had put in impressive performances, which left the crowd, who had now made their way to the front, wanting something even better.

Unsurprisingly, The Answer did indeed come up with the answer, and put on the blinding performance the night deserved.

The Answer

With a stunning stage presence, The Answer injected an atmosphere similar to the greats of the genre, which was felt throughout the venue.

The Answer's Cormac Neeson, and me!

The band, who are one of few acts signed to Albert Productions - the same record label as AC/DC, began turning heads by taking up the offer to play some support slots with Alter Bridge and The Darkness.

When asked about their gigs with The Darkness, vocalist Cormac Neeson replied: "They came across as pretty decent guys. We certainly learnt a thing or two about stage shows!"

The crowd were behind the band as soon as they hit the stage, and with each song, the energy increased.

Their next single, Into the Gutter, as well as No Questions Asked and first single Never Too Late were the obvious crowd-pleasers, but every song had something exceptionally catchy to it.

The Answer offer something new and fresh to the UK's rock scene, which isn't anywhere near as strong as it has been in the past.

But with bands such as this, it is only a matter of time before something exciting happens.
