Karl G

His remixes have been supported by Judge Jules and played on Radio 1, and SpongeBob SquarePants makes him laugh! Meet DJ Karl G from Weston-super-Mare.

Real name

Karl Gunton

DJ name

Karl G

Karl G djing

Where in Somerset are you from?

Weston-super-Mare

How, and why, did you get started?

I've been making music ever since I first got my hands on a computer that could run sequencing software, an Amiga 500 with a rather dodgy looking little sampler hanging out the back.

So for me, DJing was an obvious follow-on from making tracks - playing them out to people.  Also I found that producing music meant it wasn’t too hard to master and lots more fun than just listening to CDs.

It's great to be on the other side of the decks sometimes and be able to entertain all the people and seeing reactions to my own tracks.  I love playing songs you know in odd ways too, with effects extra acapellas/samples etc, tends to make people remember my set when they hear the track without the changes!

Where do you DJ locally?

I like to play around Weston-super-Mare any time the music style allows, but I've also enjoyed sets in Bristol, London, Leicester, Wales, Ibiza and other various places. I’ve done guest mixes for various radio stations online, and FM too which is fun to do, though not quite as fun when I’m pre-recording a set, I’d sooner be playing live.

What's your style?

You'll mostly find me playing a range from summery happy funky house to the more bass driven electro house and a bit of uplifting back-tingly trance too.

What do you listen to when you're not DJ-ing?

My MP3 player is mostly full of indie stuff, and some pretty offbeat stuff like Matisyahu, Nizlopi etc. I find that listening to what I play out when I’m not DJ-ing can get a bit head pounding.  The tracks I DJ sound fresher and more bouncy when I have a mix if I haven’t been listening to them all day aswell!

Who's your fave DJ?

Trance-wise I still highly rate Above and Beyond. I always spill a bit of my drink on the dancefloor during one of their sets :)

Where would you most like to play?

I'd most like to play a big dance festival like Global Gathering I reckon, but any big club in Ibiza would be great fun.

Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourself

I was born in 1982 and have been producing dance music from about the age of 12/13.

At the time of updating this, I have around 30 tracks released and available to buy.

I had my production work supported by Judge Jules on Radio 1, Big Al on KissFM, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim, Agnelli & Nelson, Marco V, Jon O’bir, Fabio Stein, and loads more top jocks!

My Coldplay remix was played to thousands ending the Global Gathering festival in 2005!

I managed to DJ at the legendary Turnmills before it closed.

SpongeBob SquarePants still makes me laugh.

Karl G's tunes have consistantly been in my record box and its his fresh sound to remixing and original tunes that prompted me to ask him to co produce my first tune with me, and its been a huge success. Not just a great producer but also a great DJ, his talent is also backed up by his down to earth nature and a true talent who is going to explode onto the scene in 2006 and deserveadly so, keep it up boyo

charlie
i think karl g is amazin i have heard him play and i have been at one of his house parties ur never hear anything like his music its the most up liftin bouncy music that is just made for everyonew good luck with all the remixes that u release.

Peter Livingstone
Top top top man, great djing, very unique indeed, when compared to other dj's he really entains me and to who he plays to. He drops suprise accapellas and tunes when you least expect them and they work every time.... theres nothing better than him dropping one of his superbly produced tracks in the middle of his set and everyone listening (or dancing cause he has that effect)knows it's one of his and it goes down a storm. You can see that buying music to play isn't enough for karl, he likes to taylor every set to himself buy remixing existing tunes to fit with what he offers.... not many dj's can do that. Great DJ and a Great Producer.

Jason A
Alright Karl, top stuff mate, absolutely love the coldplay remix!

DJ Simon Thier
Karl G is a really good dj. his remix for coldplay was a very special remix for me. The sound of coldplay is not really my sound but the remix was my sound. On the 31st in december i will playing the karl g remix on a party.

Karl is one talented guy and deserves to go far. With current things such as Speed of Sound remix and Quake remix, enough said!
