News and FeaturesYou are in: Somerset > Entertainment and Leisure > Music > News and Features > Karl G ![]() Karl GHis remixes have been supported by Judge Jules and played on Radio 1, and SpongeBob SquarePants makes him laugh! Meet DJ Karl G from Weston-super-Mare. Real nameKarl Gunton DJ nameKarl G ![]() Where in Somerset are you from?Weston-super-Mare How, and why, did you get started?I've been making music ever since I first got my hands on a computer that could run sequencing software, an Amiga 500 with a rather dodgy looking little sampler hanging out the back. So for me, DJing was an obvious follow-on from making tracks - playing them out to people. Also I found that producing music meant it wasn’t too hard to master and lots more fun than just listening to CDs. It's great to be on the other side of the decks sometimes and be able to entertain all the people and seeing reactions to my own tracks. I love playing songs you know in odd ways too, with effects extra acapellas/samples etc, tends to make people remember my set when they hear the track without the changes! Where do you DJ locally?I like to play around Weston-super-Mare any time the music style allows, but I've also enjoyed sets in Bristol, London, Leicester, Wales, Ibiza and other various places. I’ve done guest mixes for various radio stations online, and FM too which is fun to do, though not quite as fun when I’m pre-recording a set, I’d sooner be playing live. ![]() What's your style? You'll mostly find me playing a range from summery happy funky house to the more bass driven electro house and a bit of uplifting back-tingly trance too. What do you listen to when you're not DJ-ing?My MP3 player is mostly full of indie stuff, and some pretty offbeat stuff like Matisyahu, Nizlopi etc. I find that listening to what I play out when I’m not DJ-ing can get a bit head pounding. The tracks I DJ sound fresher and more bouncy when I have a mix if I haven’t been listening to them all day aswell! Who's your fave DJ?Trance-wise I still highly rate Above and Beyond. I always spill a bit of my drink on the dancefloor during one of their sets :) Where would you most like to play?I'd most like to play a big dance festival like Global Gathering I reckon, but any big club in Ibiza would be great fun. Finally, tell us some interesting facts about yourselfI was born in 1982 and have been producing dance music from about the age of 12/13. ![]() At the time of updating this, I have around 30 tracks released and available to buy. I had my production work supported by Judge Jules on Radio 1, Big Al on KissFM, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim, Agnelli & Nelson, Marco V, Jon O’bir, Fabio Stein, and loads more top jocks! My Coldplay remix was played to thousands ending the Global Gathering festival in 2005! I managed to DJ at the legendary Turnmills before it closed. SpongeBob SquarePants still makes me laugh. last updated: 18/12/2008 at 12:38 Have Your SayHave you heard Karl G play? What do you think of him?
