How and Why?

Women in an old BBC studio

Sonic Somerset: What's it all about?

If you're tired of your computer being as bland and boring as everyone else's, then Sonic Somerset – the place on bbc.co.uk/somerset where you can get fun Somerset desktop sounds – is just what you need!

Sonic Somerset has five categories: Startup, Shutdown, E-mail, Error Message and Miscellaneous.

There's a whole host of funny sounds and voices in each category, all local to Somerset, which you can download and assign to the above desktop events.

So, for example, you could have Pete Budd from The Wurzels singing a line from Combine Harvester (Brand New Key) for when your computer starts up, or the sound of the Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance landing for when your computer is shutting down.

You might like the idea of having Bath-based actor Anthony Head on your computer every time you get an e-mail - wey hey! Or would the portentous sound of the bells tolling in St Mary's Church in Bridgwater aptly sum up your mood for when those dreaded error messages pop up?

You can assign different sounds to all the events, or just one sound for one event – the choice is yours, and you can be as creative as you like.

It's easy to download the sounds – all you need to do is click on the links at the top of this page for simple PC and Mac instructions on how it all works.

So, what are you waiting for? Get customising!
