Events in Somerset for Children in Need 2004

On this page, you'll find out what people around the county are doing to raise money for the 25th Children in Need. And the events aren't just confined to Children in Need Day, Friday 19 November 2004.


We'd like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who's organised events in Somerset. Our inbox has been at bursting point with so much information about your hundreds of events. We've done our best to mention as many of you as we can below!

BATH

Monday 8 November

- Alison Rowsell organised a fun party games morning at her parent and toddler group

Friday 19 November

Back massages
The Health and Beauty Centre, Old King Street
8am-8pm
- Jannean Donson and her colleagues will be giving free back massages to people who donate £10 to Children in Need

Fun night
Royal United Hospital Social and Sports Club
8pm-12am
- Dave Sale is organising a fun night, including a Full three-quarter Monty, pole dancing with a disco and band

BRIDGWATER

Wednesday 10 November

*College-Conga!*
Bridgwater College
12.45-1.45pm
- Laura Kilduff and other performing arts students are going to lead the conga around the college and the town. There'll also be a pool competition, students coming to college in pyjamas and a student auction

- Cassandra Collins isn't going to speak for three days on Friday, Monday and Tuesday

- Emma Youe cycled over the Quantocks

Alex Griffiths Superbed, East Quay
- Fiona Robertson's boss came to work dressed as Pudsey. He had to stay in the bear costume all day while performing a variety of tasks!

Friday 19 November

Aerobic workout world record attempt
Chilton Trinity Sports Centre, Chilton Street
Signing in: 7.30pm; practice session: 8.15pm; record attempt: 8.40pm
- Take part in a national attempt to break the world record for the most people doing aerobics at once. Fitness instructor Debbie Johnson will be leading the record attempt. Why not go along in fancy dress and help to raise money for Children in Need?

Littlefolk Playgroup, Trinity Hall, St Saviours Avenue
- Tamsin Stenning and her friends are holding an open day with a raffle, book stall and handmade Christmas cards. The children are doing a sponsored bicycle/tricycle ride. All are welcome!

- The whole school are covering a giant Pudsey in coins

Fancy dress
- Amy Northern will be going to college this week wearing different fancy dress every day

- Teri Simmonite is raising funds by walking from Weston to Bridgwater

- Year 5 pupils are bringing a cuddly toy to school for the day; year 6, 7 and 8 pupils are wearing an 'odd' hat to school

- Alex Ellis and friends are being handcuffed together while dressed up as cowgirls and Indians

Sleepover/ghost vigil

11pm-7am
- Nick Thurston and five colleagues from Vodafone Corporate in Trowbridge are going to hold a ghost vigil at the pub, which is said to be haunted by three resident ghosts!

Miniature stream railway
Memorial Playing Field, New Lane, West Huntspill
10am-4pm
- Norman Rogers and the West Huntspill Model Engineering Society are running their miniature steam railway for Children in Need again this year. Passengers of all ages are welcome!

Sponsored cycle ride
- Susie Wakefield and three friends are going on a five-hour cycle ride across the Levels from West Huntspill

Wyndham House Residential Home
- Karen Bryant and her colleagues at Wyndham House are holding a Pudsey fun day and coffee morning. A male colleague is having his legs waxed, and few of the staff are dancing the Charleston

Scuba diving
Aquasplash
6pm to 8pm
- Costs £17.50 for scuba diving and £4.50 for snorkelling. You need to be 10 or older, and all children must be accompanied by an adult. Call 01643 708000 to book tickets.

- Karaoke, rock and roll and 10 music quiz competitions with guest judges, including the Mayor of Minehead

- Jane Price is putting on a barbeque for 56 lads!

- Rich Wotton and other members of the student association (SCSA) are holding various events for Children in Need, including a five-a-side footie match, a cake sale, a chicken limbo (we don't know that is either!) and a lucky dip

Sponsored dance mat marathon
The Bell Inn, Creech St Michael
- Ashley Brown and Beth Tarr danced for four hours and raised £134 for Children in Need!

Thursday 18 November

Somerset County Training, Broughton House
- Mandy Starks and Janet Lloyd tell us that teenagers on the Entry 2 Employment Programme have been taking part in their own spoof version of EastEnders

Sainsbury's, Hankridge
7.30-8.30pm
- Mary Lowe and other members of the Apple County Chorus harmony singing group will be putting a show for the shoppers

7am-3pm
- Claire Stevens and Marie Gibbs are dressing up in pyjamas for the day with a collection bucket on the counter over their shop

Silent collection at Chess
Brewhouse Theatre
- Sebastian Petit is organising a silent collection (notes only!) at the end of his theatre group's performance of Chess

Guess the name of the teddies
The Woolwich, High Street
- Vicky Bate and her colleagues will also be dressing up in pyjamas for the day!

Dancing for Pudsey
Staplegrove Village Hall, Staplegrove Road
11.30am
- Kids who attend the Jo Jingles classes will be Dancing for Pudsey and are being encouraged to bring along a teddy (and make a donation to Children in Need)

County Hall
- David Hawken and Paul Winter ran up and down seven flights of stairs for half an hour. They've raised around £250 - thank you! And Rebecca McNaught and two of friends have been baking cakes and selling them around the building

- Kim Thomas from Wiveliscombe is also dressing up as a Playboy Bunny Girl!

- Helen Crockett and her friends are running around the village for two hours and are getting sponsorship of £1 per each 1,000 steps

- Alison Hardman's triathlon includes five hours on a trampoline, five hours in a bath of potatoes and peas, and five hours watching Friends!

On the Levels between Glastonbury and Wells
- Tom Ponting will be jumping ditches in fancy dress

Saturday 20 November

The Paper Shop
- Charlene Taylor and her colleagues are dressing up as fairies and witches for the day

Tuesday 16 November

Tiny Teds, Kewstoke
- Laura Rickards tell us the children have been decorating Pudsey biscuits as well as colouring and making Pudsey badges

Wednesday 17 November

Drag beauty pageant
7-9pm
- A beauty pageant for men dressed as women and vice versa

Thursday 18 November

Light up the Sky
Uphill Beach
8pm
- There'll be a great show of illuminated kites on the beach. The organisers, South West Association of Traction Kiting, want kite flyers to think of exciting ways to illuminate their kites for the best effect in the night sky. They then have to launch these kites and keep them flying for as long as possible to create a stunning spectacle for onlookers!

- Natasha Miles had a cake sale at her Guide pack on Thursday and is holding a party for Pudsey on Friday

Pudsey party
Stars, 4-5 Beach Road
- The club's holding a Pudsey party with half of the takings on the door going to Children in Need. If you weren't able to do anything for Pudsey during the day, why not go along and take part in a traffic light party and other fun and games?

- Rachel Bentley has been busy baking biscuits to sell with her family and friends

The Great Aussie Party
Ashbrooke House School
- The school's having a dressing-up day, a party full of Australian food and lots of other events

- Bob Allam will be busking with his guitar

Churchill Comprehensive School, Langford

- Students get to throw wet sponges at their teachers or tip buckets of freezing water over their heads!

Bring a Teddy to Work Day
Cadbury Garden Centre, Congresbury
- Gary Bressington and his colleagues will be bringing teddies to work with them

Weston College Care and Early Years Faculty
10am-2pm
- Events include sponge the teacher, human wheel barrow races and raffles

Three-legged day
Weston College Business Faculty
9am-4.30pm
- Lisa Spriggs and friends are pairing up and being tied together for the whole college day!

Leg waxing for men
The Major from Glengarry, Upper Church Road

Sidcot School
- The students are wearing fancy dress, and no doubt there'll be laughing at their teachers who are competing in their own version of The X Factor!

Aerobic workout world record attempt
Cadbury House Leisure Club, Congresbury
- Just as in Bridgwater, people in Congresbury are taking part in the world record attempt. Lee White and his colleagues at the leisure club are also holding some other events throughout the day

Naked kite land-boarding and body dragging
Ian Houlton and colleagues from Paynes Timber in Yeovil are getting their kit off to go kite land-boarding, jumping and body dragging

Talent show

- With different age groups and different levels; finalists are appearing live the following Friday when a winner will be picked by the judges

Monday 15 November

11am-11pm
- Shelly Lawrence and friends are dressing up as cheerleaders in roller boots for a 12-hour drinkathon

Tuesday 16 November

Sponsored dog walk
- Gillian Holland went on a five-mile dog walk for Children in Need

Friday 19 November

Preston School Sports Hall
- The staff are holding a karaoke event

- Andy Lunt has written a special song for Children in Need; all proceeds are going to Children in Need
