From the hundreds of well-known people who, over the years, have Somerset in common, we want to know who you think deserves the title, Local Hero.

We are looking for the iconic figure of Somerset and we want you to help us decide.

They could be famous people from history, showbiz stars who are connected with the area, well-known musicians or sports personalities, or just well-respected people who have inspired those around them.

We're working alongside our colleagues at BBC Somerset Sound and BBC Radio Bristol who are also looking for your nominations.

A panel of judges will sift through your votes and suggestions; they have the difficult task of choosing who from the Somerset County Council area, and who from the former county of Avon, will go forward to the West Country final.

The West's chosen Local Hero will then feature in a 40-minute documentary to be shown on BBC ONE later in the Spring.

Below, we've listed a few ideas and some related links - you can either choose one of these or suggest your own.

Once submitted, your nomination will go forward to our Somerset and Bristol panels who will then select one name from each area to go forward to the final - when you'll get the chance to vote.

Keep an eye on these pages to follow the progress of our nominations - and, of course, to discover who will be voted the West's Local Hero.

Nominations must be received by 11.59pm on Sunday 1 February 2004
