All aboard the Lance

Today's report: A tour of the Lance | Heading north by north-west

A tour of the Lance

The team load up and prepare for their 12 day stint on board Arctic research vessel, the Lance. Environmentalist Philippe Cousteau is keen to get going, but first things first, while the boat is in sheltered Longyearbyen harbour the captain gives an essential safety briefing and tour of the boat, including the ship's hospital. The team get the chance to try on their bright orange survival suits.

Heading north by north-west

Expedition leader Paul Rose enjoys a beautiful, clear day on board the Lance, which has now left the harbour. The team are 78°19' north, 15°22' east, just north of Longyearbyen. Having completed one good test dive yesterday, the Lance is now heading north-north-west towards Nordfjorden and what is expected to be a stunning and beautiful ice edge. Now that Tooni, Lucy and Philippe have familiarised themselves with the cold-water dive gear, the team anticipate their first ice-dive.
