This is a story about a homeless old woman who is called Jan. She carries bags, walking to and fro.
She walks the streets of Newcastle. She doesn't know where her next meal is coming from so she walks the streets and looks in the bins for food. Sometimes she begs for money.
Some years ago she owned a shop and made a lot of money but the shop trade went down and eventually she went bankrupt. Her family were unable to help her.
She got so fed up of life that she started drinking heavily and taking drugs. One night in the pub she met a rough crowd, they drank a lot and went down to the river to take some drugs where they wouldn't get caught.
After a while they all got so high on drugs that an argument started with two of the men. Whilst they were fighting they had not noticed that old Jan had passed out and was now in a coma.
A young couple passing by asked what the matter was and as Jan was so ill they phoned for an ambulance. They took Jan to hospital and the police got involved. They charged the two men with taking illegal drugs but left Jan alone as she was old. The two men were put in jail and sadly Jan died of a drugs overdose. All the people who lived on the streets of Newcastle went to her funeral. Everyone bought flowers who knew her and many tears were shed for poor old Jan.
